| Beads,
the environment, and Health Care by Jean Veale, Nov 2002 The United Church is sponsoring Beads of Hope and beaded pins made by South African women will be part of the project. If you did not read the story of AIDS in Africa, in the October Observer, borrow a copy from someone (it could be me) and understand the situation. I believe you will be be eager to share in the raising of a million dollars in the next two years, to help. We can do it. Remember, the outstanding success on the Land Mines Project, and become involved in this one. We'll let you know as soon as we get our pins, and you will bear all about it at a church service soon. Early in the New Year, we are preparing a program on the Kyoto Accord. This is a topic which is controversial, but there is much of interest to learn. Perhaps as we look at our wasteful use of the world's resources, we may see it as an opportunity to become leaders in conversation and welcome new developments which can bring about change. We plan to have a speaker, study books and to learn many things. There are places where non-polluting sources of energy are being developed, and it is possible to become part of the solution. Please plan to become one of the 'learning' group. A project dealing with Health Care and specifically with the need for adequate Home Care, is being planned for the early Winter. |

Funds by Jean Veale, June 2002 Lenten Offerings were lower in 2002 as was the profit from our Vittoria Choir Concert. Still, we were able to give a total of $1,325 to the organizations listed below. Thank you all who supported these projects through Lenten Offerings and Concert attendance. We trust that next year we may be able to again increase our Outreach. We would welcome new members to our Committee, new ideas for promotion and fund-raising. Please talk to us if you have a suggestion. |

| Our church mission is spiritual
growth and compassionate living. Within our church, committed
people live this creed, as they assist in the weekly life of the
church through time and talents. They support groups and
organizations, thus becoming part of our total outreach in our community and in the World.
Committee 'awareness' information told us about the Mission and Service Fund, which reaches out to help daily, in Canada and around the world, because we provide funds. Special Appeals presented the story of Jubilee Debt Cancellation for third world countries, hopelessly mired in debt. We showed our concern, and progress is being reported. Also Hamilton Conference's Landmine Mine Clearing--Sudan project is being carried on, because many from the Conference provided funds. As you read the Observer, the Mandate, and other publications, if you feel special concern about some story, share it with us. Together we can look for a way to help. We can strengthen St. James mission of compassionate living, and help to make a difference in our community and the world. submitted by Jean Veale, 2001 |

Sudan Land Mine Project
Update
By the end of the September 7, 2001 fundraiser in Hamilton, Conference had raised $130,840 -- exceeding the original goal of $120,000. Individual gifts represented 24 percent, Pastoral Charges gave 60 percent, donations from church groups came to 15 percent, and three service clubs contributed one percent. Landmine injuries and deaths continue throughout the world. There is an incident every 20 minutes. An estimated 300,000 children severely damaged. So Conference Committee chose to keep the Campaign open until year end. Work will continue in training and assisting in Sudan as long as there is money.
